Impact of food on the environment
animal welfare
factory farming
animals are treated as commodities, crammed in abhorrent living conditions with no space, natural light or stimuli.
mulitation is commonplace; animals are often put through procedures that cause large amounts of pain without anesthetic. 90% of Europe's pigs have their tails chopped off, despite this being an illegal practice.
demand fast-growing, high-yielding animals - as such many artifical hormones are used, putting animals at risk of developing painful physiological problems.
potential client: someone that cares about animal welfare, individuals with a strong moral compass, "woke" individuals
morals/ethics: studies have shown that many animals are capable of feeling emotion, making eating meat feel inhumane
use of chemicals/inorganic materials
many different fertilisers, pesticides used in conventional farming - damaging towards both environment and personal health
releases harmful greenhouse gases, causes eutrophication of waterways.
heavy metals found in these substances can cause problems in organs, are a major health hazard
potential client: organic advocates, farmers, agricultural workers
greenhouse gas emissions
food waste: rotting food releases methane, a greenhouse gas
production, transportation, handling of food generates significant emissions of carbon dioxide
in general, food systems account for a third of the world's greenhouse gas
livestock industry alone responsible for 15% of world's greenhosue gas emissions
most emissions caused by feed production (58%)
38% released from digestive systems of animals (farting!!) - ruminants produce large amoutns of methane, an incredibly potent greenhouse gas
avoiding meat a realistic solution: only 29% of emissions come from plant-based products, as opposed to 57% from the meat industry, including over 25% from just beef alone
potential client: climate activists/advocates, teenagers (individuals of the age where they become more aware, more wanting to make a change)
food wastage
over 1/3 of all food produced is wasted - an estimated 2.5 billion tons
wasted food is worth $230 billion, an exorbitant amount
wasted food clogs landfills, causes the emission of greenhouse gas; rotting food produces methane
disposing organic waste in landfills causes the loss of important soil nutrients
potential client: climate activists, those in the food industry, agricultural workers
