Kanner et al. 1981
Procedure:
completed the HSUP for events over the previous month and continued to do this for once a month for nine months
completed the life event scale for 6 months before the study, two years prior the study and again when the study ended
-
also completed the Hopkins Symptom checklist which assess symptoms of anxiety and depression each month
findings
found significant positive correlation between hassle frequency and psychological symptoms at the start and the end of the study, for both men and women
-
-
Aim: To investigate the view that daily hassles might be a better predictor of illness than life changes
accumulation effect
-
hassles accumulate over a series of days to create persistent irritations, frustrations and overloads, which then resulted in more serious stress reactions
amplification effect
for example moving house (life change), losing a key (daily hassle) might take a greater significance than normal - the hassle becomes a last straw
-
daily hassles = relatively minor, but frequent, frustrations and annoyances of every day life
