Sec 2 History (Term 1)
Rise of Japan
Gunboat Diplomacy
During
The US had "gunboat diplomacy", and arrived in japan in 1853 to open markets. They had modern warships and ships, unlike Japan which had a basic military. They forced Japan to sign treaties to open trade with the west.
Result
Japan saw how advance the US was ahead of them, they started industrialization, made the army more advance, and added compulsary army concript.
Set up systems to learn from the west:
-Iwakura Mission
-Creation of mordern universities
Advanced its navy
Before
Japan was very closed, only a few ports allowed trade,
Rising Asian Powers
Sino-Japanease War
Treaty of Shimonoseki
China recognizes definitively the full and complete independence and autonomy of Korea, which is under the influence of Japan
China cedes to Japan in perpetuity and full sovereignty of the Pescadores group, Formosa (Taiwan) and the eastern portion of the bay of Liaodong Peninsula (Dalian)
China agrees to pay to Japan as a war indemnity (The great powers like Russia, UK and France forced Japan to withdraw this)
China is to grant Japan most favoured nation status for foreign trade (no taxes), and has to open several cities to Japnease trade.
Forced Japan to move out of the Liaodong Peninsula, which Russia took
Russo-Japanease War
Japan defeated Russia, which was at that time a European Great Power
Gave Japanese the confidence for further aggression, as it proved Japan's millitary strength.
Treaty of Portsmouth:
-Gave Port Arthur and the Liaodong Peninsula to the Japanese (Which it took from Japan after Sino-Japanease War)
-Russia recognised Korea as part of the sphere of influence of Japan
Due the the wars and the rising power (Japan):
-The two wars which Japan both won gave them a boost in confidence in its millitary strength
-Japan felt resentful towards some western powers due to the Triple Intervention

The Singapore Strategy
The British had build a Naval Base in Sembawang, and in the case of war, the british could send ships over.
The British expected local defenses to be able to defend to island for up to a month for reinforcements (troops and ships) to reach
Singapore was considered "Inpregenetable" by the British, who felt that the island could defend itself.
There were air field and bunkers scattered over the island, and the southern and east coast of Singapore was well fortified
The British were expecting a naval attack, hence bunkers and 16 inch guns (and other guns) were stationed along the coast
Bunkers were build in fort canning, sambawang and laberdor.
-
Troops and reinforcements were sent at the end of 1940, which included indian and british soldiers.
In the February of 1941, Australian soldiers arrived in Singapore
-
How Singapore fell
The soldiers stationed on the island were very confidents as they were told that the Japanease had bad equipment and were not able to fight well
There were spies in Singapore that told to Japanease about the naval guns stationed on the Southern and Eastern coasts, about where the stockpiles were, and the location of bunkers
-
The British were illi equiped, as they were more used to fight in desert warfare, not tropical warfare.
Their tanks were large and bunky, and their equipment were suited for cold nights
They decided to split their troops out in a line in the dense jungles of Malaya, which allowed the Japanease to kill them one by one
-
After Johor Bahru was taken by the Japanease, the last standing troops were all in Singapore
The Japanease commander stationed himself at the Sultan of Johor's house, risking that the British would not fire at their old friend's house, which proved correct.
-
-
-
Japan had far better technology then the British, who had 23 tanks compared to the Japanease 200
The 2 battle ships earlier send to Singapore were obselete during the war because they were spotted and sunk by Japanease planes before the invasion.
There were only 166 planes stationed in singapore compared the the requested 500, and many of the planes were unfit for service
-
Summary
The british troops
The british were under-prepared although they had plenty of time to lay defenses (no defense on the north coast)
-
-
The british war tactics were inadequate and depended too heavily on the island defending itself of extended durations of time which it was incapable of.
The stratergy were to defend the island using planes and soliders as they outnumbered the Japanease, but the airfields were soon destroyed and the British never send more ships
The british morale were low, and since many soldiers were not fighting to defend their home, they surrendered after a few casualties.
