PCV2 in Pigs
Diagnosis
For instance, PCV2-SD- weight loss, lymphocyte depletion with granulomatous inflammation of lymphoid tissues and presence of PCV2 in damaged tissues.
General diagnosis is achieved by clinical signs, histopathology and serology.
Oral fluid testing of saliva, oral musical transudate and gingival crevicular fluid.
Requires one person to extract saliva from cheap enrichment items - minimal training so low labour cost.
Increased saliva can be obtained through novel presentation of ropes- a unique location or enticement of sucrose. More repeats can be achiebved with greater samples - valid and reliable results.
There is a reliance on farmer to collect sample at the same time, pout fluid in a sterile and clearly labelled tube to be stored in a chilled environment.
However, oral and serum fluid fails to detect persisitently infected pigs with PCV2-post-viremia.
-
Positive welfare cost- aligns with the 5 freedoms of animal welfare. Sucrose can boost positive affective state of pigs. No stressful handling- increases pig-farmer affinity and cortisol concentrations.
-
Commerical enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kits detects PCV2 antigens and PCV2-specific antibodies.
