Providing Support to Struggling Students
2) Provided formative assessments and instructions that are catered to the student's needs.
Use differentiation to ensure that the educational needs of each student are met.
Develop lessons that draw on student interest.
Regularly conduct self-assessments to cater future lessons to students' needs and comfort levels.
Have a particular routine to start each class.
1) Get to know the students I teach
Learn methods that motivate and excite each student.
Gain an understanding of any social or emotional triggers students may have.
Develop a repour with students creating a safe environment.
5) Provide small group opportunities during instructional time, and create one on one situations that do not single out the student.
Have students collaborate with others who have varied skill sets.
Keep instructions simple to promote activity over continues conversation.
4) Use different teaching methods to increase engagement.
Survey students to gain an understanding of struggles and strengths from their perspective..
Create lessons that appeal to various learning styles. (Kinesthetic learning, Problem-based learning. etc.)
Use a method to ensure students are heard while being able to continue class. (an example would be a teacher's mailbox or playing cards.)
7) Communicate with the school counselor.
Discuss concerns and documentation..
Ask for their opinion and support on the next steps.
6) Have a discussion with the student's family if additional support is required.
Communicate the things seen in class and ask the family if they are experiencing similar behaviors.
Create a plan which allows the teacher and parents to see improvements or digressions consistently.
3) Give examples, and model what I would like to see accomplished in class. This is followed by checking for student understanding..
Verbally explain and write down what I would like the students to accomplish.
Physically show students what I would like to accomplish. This can be from the teacher modeling or asking students to model.
Ask the students if they understand. The response can be verbal or providing a thumbs up.
