Topic 7- run for your life
Key words
Tendons
Non-elastic tissue that connects muscles to bones
Ligaments
elastic tissue that joins bones
Determines ROM
Joints
Area where two bones attach for the sake of ROM
Made of fibrous connective tissue and cartilage
Skeletal muscles
Muscles that are attached to bones
arranged in antagonistic pairs
Antagonistic muscle pairs
Pairs of muscles that pull in opposite directions
Extensors - act to straighten joint
Flexors - act to bend joint
Muscle contraction
Sliding filament theory
Ca2+ ions released from SR upon nerve stimulation, binds to troponin molecule and changes its shape
Myosin binding sites are exposed, head moves forward to form actomyosin bridge
ADP + Pi released, myosin head moves forward thus shortening sarcolema
Free ATP binds, myosin head changes shape and moves back to original shape
ATPase in myosin head breaks ATP back to ADP + Pi to restore original state
Repeated stimulation causes contraction. If stimulation stops, ATP is released to actively transport Ca2+ ions back to SR
