- - - - First stage 1918-20
        
        Characterised by very fluid campaigns, battles and skirmishes fought over large areas in European Russia.
        
        A coordinated attack was virtually impossible from the whites due to the geographical division and lack of leadership.
        
        The war was fought mainly in the east and south in Russia.
        
        In summer 1918, Red resistance prevented Denikin (Cossack army) from linking up with the Whites in the east.
        
        Kolchak's army captured Kazan and Samara but halted by Reds.
        
        Summer 1919 Denikin began another offensive and got close to Moscow but Trotsky forced him back south.
        
        Yudenich's army was small, about 15,000, but made it close to Petrograd in October but were forced back
        -In 1920 Kolchak was captured and shot. Denikin;s white army held out but the Green Peasant Army under Nestor Makhno fought as a division for the Reds
        
        Bolsheviks geographical advantages and superior organisation in the face of White division, most of the former Russian Empire was in Communist hands. 10 million lives lost from hunger and epidemic diseases as well as the military action
      - Role of Trotsky
        Trotsky proved himself a skillful organiser and ensure the Red Army was fed and well armed and the reality was that Trotsky could inspire and helped to boost the morale not only of the troops but other Bolsheviks.
        Trotsky was prepared to use whatever methods necessary. He recruited 50,000 former Tsarist army officers for their experiences and used them to train new recruits and members of the Cheka were used behind the lines to shoot deserters.

      - Murder of the Tsar
        He had few supporters and most of the White Army were not fighting to restore him to the throne.
        Many Bolsheviks feared that the Tsar might become a symbol for resistance against the Bolsheviks.
        In July 1918 the whole family was shot without trial, their deaths did not achieve anything in reality - only removed the possible figurehead for the White Army
    - - Lenin's Centralisation
        The victory of the Reds was mainly due to Lenin's ability ot centralise power.
        In theory, centralisation was everything against the Communist ideas he believed in. Despite this though Centralisation did continue following Red victory. His justification was that apparently the revolutionary government was still in danger.
