Treaty of Brest-Litovsk
Signed on March 3rd 1918.
The terms were harsh, Russia lost Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Bessarabia, Georgia, Belarus and Ukraine. The losses amounted to a sixth of Russia's population, 26% of their railway lines and 74% of its coal and iron supplies plus Russia had to pay 3 billions roubles in reparations.
Lenin admitted this was harsh but said people had to accept it but struggled to persuade others. LW SRs argues strongly against the acceptance of this treaty.
Only after Lenin had threatened to resign did he get his way. Trotsky, Stalin and Zinoviev supported this. Bukharin, Kamenec and Dzerzhinsky voted against the peace.
This decision was important for the future direction of the Soviet State and established that "socialism at home" would take priority over the spread of international revolution.
Also confirmed that Russia would be a one-party state since the LW SRs walked out of the Sovnarkom in protest
**Bolsheviks in March formally adopted the title of the "Communist Party" and governed alone.
