A New Zealand Health issue! Methamphetamine
Determinants
Social
Cycle of use in the family
being around gangs
Environmental
The environment is a massive factor that can influence people to take meth. In many places, the drug or the ingredients for it is very accessible, with many ingredients and tools able to be purchased in common stores. If you live in an area where there are meth labs and where there is a lot of access to the drug, there is a higher chance of you being exposed to it.
Political
Cultural
Personal
Trauma can be an influence because people may use meth to fill that void in their life. People may use meth as a way to distract or solve their problems instead of seeking professional help for it.
Stress from work or pressures can cause people to use meth because of its ability to keep you awake or alert for many more hours. Housewives, businessmen have all been linked to the use and selling of meth.
Lifestyle
Because of a lack of sleep and poor diet, the use of drugs could potentially lead to the influence of Meth especially for teenagers. This is because of the high it can give a person and because it makes them ‘feel better’. If teenagers hear or see that this is what it can do, the decrease in lifestyle can have a huge snowballing effect on their health if this is their way of ‘recovery’
Implications
Societal
Crime rates increase due to the gangs buying and selling meth as they are likely to have firearms and millions of dollars worth of meth.
Maybe more tax monety towards paying for rehab centers
Personal
Psychosis, headaches, dizziness, aggression, hallucinations, meth mouth
Interpersonal
Young children can be left unattended by parents using the drug. Therefore older siblings have to take care of their siblings. This puts lots of responsibility on young kids who shouldn't have all that pressure.
Cooking meth with people in the house could be affected because of expelling chemicals each day (negative, longterm).
Relationships with family & friends lost --> might be challenging to reform these relationship since family/ friends might want to have nothing to do with a meth user.
Strategies
Better and more education on the topic of meth as well as other drugs, so perhaps compulsory health courses for people until end of year 13 to enable full knowledge of the repercussion of drug use
If we are able to treat addiction as a health issue rather than a police issue, (like Portugal) then people's health can improve and overall in the society less people will suffer from the use and widespread accessibility of meth and other drugs.
Government- stop criminalizing drugs but glorify alcohol. Gov could decriminalize drugs.
More rehabilitation centers
Why is Methamphetamine an issue in NZ?
Meth is an issue because it can have devastating effects on both a person physically and mentally, but also negatively affect your peers/family and society
An addiction is a brain disorder where it is hard to stop or control your cravings. An addiction to meth is where an individual can not stop taking the drug, even if they are willing to stop. They are addicted to the drug itself, craving it and feeling like they can’t live without it. Methamphetamine is an issue in NZ because it is a highly addictive drug and is easily available in society.
