Literary devices
"She suffered endlessly" This is a hyperbole. It emphazises the amount of misery she was in, and her longing to be wealthy and rich.
"Mean walls" Personification. She feels the walls were in a bad state and jeered at her in a way to showcase how underprivileged they were.
"Drunk with pleasure" She is comparing pleasure with some sort of intoxicating drink on which she is drunk. It implies how ecstatic and full of pleasure she is.
Character analysis
Monsieur Loisel
He was caring and loved his wife. Even thogh they were poor, he gave up four hundred francs just satisfy his wife with a dress.
Madame Loisel
She felt she deserved to have pretty and fine things. She was in so much anguish and miseryat the fact that she was poor. She was not satisfied or content with her life.
In appearence she was pretty and charming. But she lost all this when she worked hard so her husband could fill their debts of the loans they had to take for her to look wealthy for just one night!.
Structure
Climax
They took a cab and reached home. Madame loisel wanted to see herself once more so she looked in the mirror horrified to find the missing necklace gone.
Denouement
Her husband looked everywhere but they could not find the necklace. They decided to find a jeweler that could make a similar one. The price was hefty but Mr. Loisel took a loan and got the necklace made. They spent the next ten years working hard to pay of the debt. In this process Madame Loisel lost most of her beauty. She started to look like the other hardworking wives.
Rising action
Her husband asks her to borrow jewelry from her friend Madame Forestier. She borrows an expensive looking diamond necklace.
The ball went very well. She was the prettiest woman over there and all eyes were on her. She enjoyed of herself and was ecstatic and drunk with pleasure. She left the next day as her husband had slept in a deserted room.
First conflict
She is called to an important ball by the minister of education but she is distressed as she does not have any pretty dress. She later receives money from her husband and buys a dress but still is distressed as she did not have any jewelry .
Resolution
The debt was finally paid off. One day Madame Loisel bumped into Madame Forestier. Her friend was surprised to see her in such a state. Madame Loisel narrated her story. To her astonishment her friend told her that the necklace she lent was a knock off. This ending is quite ironical as Madame Loisel had made herself and her husband give up ten years of their lives just so she could look pretty and wealthy at a ball. And to add to that, the necklace she lent was a knockoff!
Exposition
We start the story with Lady Loisel, she tells us that she was born a charming and pretty girl but sadly to a Family of artisans. This tells her that she was poor. She was married to a clerk in the Ministry of education. She lives the first years of her life in misery that she is poor.
Atmosphere
"She flung the invitation petulantly" "out of furious eyes" "said impatiently " The atmosphere turns angry and irritated when we expect Madame Loisel to be happy and therefore the atmosphere to be happy. Later it is revealed why she is angry.(She did not have a dress)
"Utmost distress" "uttered a cry" "Astonishment" "dumbfounded" The atmosphere is confused and astonished but there is a hint of fear as Madame Loisel stammers. " I- I- I've no longer got ......."
