Muscle Structure – Fiber Types
3 primary muscle fiber types
Type I (slow)
Type IIA (intermediate)
Type IIX (fast)
Each muscle is a combination of 3 types of muscle fibers
Fiber types changes with age
Decr in number and size of type II fibers
fiber type and function
Type 1
Stability and postural muscles
Can carry out sustained activities because they do not fatigue rapidly
Eg; Soleus muscle have higher percentage
of type 1
Almost always active during erect standing
But they have relatively small, slow motor units
Can make small adjustments in muscle tension that are required to keep the body
balanced and counteracts the effects of gravity
Type 2
Mobility and non postural muscles
Responsible for producing large range of motion of the bony components
Eg: Hamstring and the gastrocnemius
Produce more force than type 1 fibers
Contract at a significantly higher velocity
Power output is also higher compared to type 1
