Jack is a kid from Wyoming, procrastinating on applying to collage because he doesn't know what to do with his life, despite many attempts to find his calling. After having strange dreams, Jack talks to his friends and does some research on dreaming and sleep. After an odd night's rest, he speaks with his friends again and one of them suggests he might be doing some kind of astral projection. After a bit a research on the topic, Jack goes to sleep with the intention of astral projecting. He succeeds somewhat, but becomes lost in a void and winds up in a gray, rocky maze of a landscape, where he has a physical body. There he encounters demons, who chase him until he falls and corners himself. But instead of killing him, one of them simply taps him, and with a touch he is able to understand their screeching. The demons tell him that he is in Hell, and that for finding his way there, he has earned a reward of great power. They claim they are the sworn protectors of organic life, but that none had come to claim their power in a very long time, surmising he must be a being of immense power himself to have made it there when no others could. They say that they are creations of organic's concepts given form and mind and that a demon and an organic together are greater than the sum of their parts. They offer themselves and their power to him, though he could only choose one to be his partner. Naturally, Jack is hesitant to accept a deal with a literal demon. He also admits that he isn't a powerful being, but a weak human with little power of his own, and that he arrived there by accident. Despite this, the demons insist he is worthy. They claim that unintentional entry into hell is physically impossible, so if he was there, he must have been searching for something, and whatever it was, it was in Hell. In the end, he chooses Slight, the first demon he had seen, to be his partner. Slight places her hand upon Jack, and he feels at peace. He then wakes up in a cold sweat, unsure if his dream had really just been a dream.
