What is a professional learning community?
For the teacher librarian: provides an opportunity to talk about issues in depth, work with leaders on solutions, participate in school wide initiatives and take leadership role (DuFour & Eaker, 2005)
Concept of LO focuses on learning as a tool, a lever, and a philosophy for sustainable change and renovation in organisation in a fast changing world (Hui, Baruch, 2010)
The basis of a PLC is a collective commitment to guiding principles that articulate what the people in the school believe and what they seek to create (DuFour and Eaker, 1998, P.25)
Teams must establish norms by which they will operate, goals that they wish to accomplish, ways to assess the effectiveness of their team and a process by which they to resolve conflicts. (DuFour and Eaker, 1998) in (Lujan and Day, 2010)
5 antecedents to team learning: Team commitment, Leadership, Goal Setting, Development and training, organizational culture. (Bui, Hong, 2010 p 214)
DuFour & Eaker:
Common in schools (and districts) where a major push is being made on quality and on building a cohesive effort to meet standards, work through tough assessment issues or push school wide initiatives
What is NOT a professional learning community?
a faculty meeting or a lunch room conversation (DuFour & Eaker, 2005)
Sending teachers away to off site conferences Peter Senge (John O'neil, 1995)
Why are professional learning communities important?
No organisation can survive, grow, evolve or reamin healthy if group reflection and improvement are not center posts of their organisational structure. (DuFour & Eaker, 2005)
An organization's ability to learn may make the difference between its trhing or perishing in the years ahead - Peter Senge (John O'neil, 1995)
There is always a huge difference between individual capability and collective capability (individual learning and collective learning) This is rarely reflected in how schools are organised becasue education is so higly individualistic Peter Senge (John O'neil, 1995)
Professional development will benefit from development and training when these (development and training) are carried out effectively. (Blackmore and Castely, 2005) in Bui, Hong 2010
Employees with high level of personal mastery often have better performance (Bloisi et al., 2007) Further, personal mastery can create a balanced work and home life (Baruch, 2004; Doherty and Manfredi, 2006; Johnson, 2006) in Bui, Hong 2010

What is a Learning Organisation?

How do Professional Learning Communites function?
A learning process is a process that occurs over time whereby people's beliefs, ways of seeing the world and ultimately their skills and capabilities change. This occurs over time and it's always connected to your domain of taking action, weather its about relationships or about professional work. Peter Senge (John O'neil, 1995)
