- looks to their primary caregiver for consistency of care
1) When care is inconsistent, unreliable and unpredictable, child will develop a sense of mistrust, suspicion and anxiety. 2) Child will not have confidence in the world around them or in their abilities to influence events.

According to him, personality develops in a predetermined order through 8 stages of psycho-social development. Successful completion of each stage = healthy personality and the acquisition of basic virtues. (characteristic strengths which the ego can use to resolve subsequent crises)
