Communication
Delivering bad news
SPIKES method
This will be in all fields of medicine.
Will need to be delivered with empathy and respect for the patient and their friends and family.
All patients will react differently. it is therefore vital to be able to adapt your communication style to suit the patient.
Academic research (eg. as a GP)
Presentation of ideas and findings, and the ability to deliver them and state why they are important to an audience.
Educate patients on lifestyle choices in an understandable way - this will hit home with them far more effectively.
Patients might not be willing to give sensitive information
Mental health
The ability to communicate with those with mental illnesses is challenging and vital. there might be no visible symptoms, so you need to be able to understand the patient.
Find out about social history

Relationships
Drugs and alcohol
Money
Communicate effectively about the patient's last days in palliative care, and make those days comfortable and dignified.
Genuine interest in medicine
Ability to treat people with respect
Personal organisation

Possibility of poly pharmacy - need to be able to manage many illnesses at once
Need to be efficient to see all the patients on the ward
Ability to organise what tests to conduct
Ability to take an effective history, covering:
History of complaint
Past medical history
Drugs and allergies
Social and family history
ABCDE method in emergency medicine
Need to work fast and effective to find the serious issues and anything that might be causing harm
Teamwork
Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team
Work with patient to manage long-term conditions
In surgery, many people will be present in the operating room, and the situation might be very tense.
