Reading section consists of:
3 passages
Approximately 700 words each
Followed by 12 - 14 questions each passage
Strategies for reading:
Be familiar with directions. Dismiss them to save time.
Don´t worry if you don´t have background knowledge to answer.
Scroll down to see questions.
Read the passage quickly, don´t spend too much time.
Skim through passages and questions to identify main ideas.
Identify what type of question it is to know how to answer:
Vocabulary Questions: highlighted word, read context.
Referent Questions: highlighted word, read context following it.
Paraphrasing Questions: read highlighted sentence and context around it.
Sentence Insertion Questions: darkened squares indicate where a sentence is inserted; read context.
Factual Information Questions / Negative Factual Information Questions: skim for key words and read sentences around them.
Inference Questions: chose key word from question, skim, read context.
Rhetorical Questions: highlighted word or phrase and read context.
Overall Ideas Questions: focus on main ideas.
Choose the best answer for each question.
Don´t spend too much time on a question you don´t know.
Monitor your time.
Guess to complete the section before times up.
Remember information that can help you later.
Improving Reading Comprenhension
Read in English everyday, such as academic material, newspaper, etc.
Read outloud.
Look at titles, subheadings, or questions to know what information you can expect.
Ask yourself questions about the reading.
Identify transition words and phrases, they provides information about relationship between ideas.
Summarize main points of the reading.
Time yourself.
Improving Vocabulary Skills
Study everyday at least 20 minutes.
Practice vocabulary
Study word families, to understand their forms and how to use them.
Learn synonims to replace other words.
Study words and its context in a sentence, to know how the word is used to express ideas.
Listen and say different words to recognize them based on its pronunciation.
Don´t study technical words.
