Testing and Accommodations:

Break down the tasks into small instructions.

Continually check student’s progress and give regular feedback.

Use diagrams, pictures and graphics to support instructions for tasks.

Provide a quiet reading space to allow students practice reading and pronouncing words.

Use audio books, and books with large print and big spaces between lines.

Announce reading assignments well in advance to allow student to prepare themselves at home and with counsellors.

Use oral in place of writing assessment when possible.

Allow the use of tape recorders in class as a way to capture student’s work.

Provide notes or outlines to reduce the amount of writing. This way student can go back to the note to check their work.

Arrange peer assistance and tutoring opportunities. This activity helps the struggling student and secure learning for the assisting student.

Offer manipulatives throughout instructions. For example: tactile experience can help student to visualise the abstract concept.

Use rhythm and music to teach mathematics facts and to set steps to a beat.

Avoid overly complicated instruction and clearly separate items when spacing them on the exam sheet.

Consider other forms of testing (oral, hands-on demonstrations, open-book, etc).

Develop a scoring guide, share it with students, and provide models of examples of each level of performance to encourage them to aim the best they can do.
