the importance of teacher leadership
In the classroom
they continue to teach & improve their own learning
they become more expert in their knowledge which increase professional identity & confidence in teaching
they set goals, implement procedures, instruct, guide, facilitate, mobilize learners, motivate & inspire learners
there is teacher commitment and care coupled with innovative teaching practices
they transform & model learners behaviour
in decision making & school development
they are involved in developing school policy on aspects related to homework, assembly, discipline, pupil admissions & sporting codes
They are also involved in management functions such as ‘responsibility for stock, textbooks and uniforms
not fully involved in school-wide decision-making processes and when they are, its restricted
our trainers are involved in activities like organising and leading ‘reviews of the school year plan
Our trainers are involved in setting ‘the duty roster for their colleagues & they are also entrusted to run & lead projects
qualitative research endorsed that teacher involvement in decision-making at a whole school level was severely restricted, the exact opposite to our trainers' involvement.
it's evident that little space is created for teachers to find their voice, including policy-making. but our trainers are part of the Technical Working Group (TWG) for curriculum & assessment development
in collaboration with other teachers
they provide in-service training to assist other educators/fellow trainers in their subject areas
they operate as ‘curriculum leaders like (TWG), grade heads (subject experts), leaders of various committees working collaboratively with their colleagues and planning jointly
facilitate extra-mural activities and in the selection instructional materials for their grades/subjects
offer informal in-service training by sharing new methods, e.g. training others on the use of e-learning and Moodle platform
Advantages of teacher leadership
increase teacher efficacy and effectiveness, and improve the retention of the classroom experts' students deserve.
gives them a sense of professional efficacy producing effective classroom teachers
empowered teachers that function as autonomous professionals and leaders, build a sense of professional confidence and pride that feeds effective teaching practice.
allows them to bring their unique knowledge in meeting student needs, particularly in tailoring student services
they are more likely to succeed and less likely to experience frustration and professional burnout.
in our institution, it creates a pathway for a leadership promotion though it's still a challenge for trainers to be HoD with no prior leadership experience
Teachers reasons for not seeking leadership roles
There is a sense that the principals do not want to share leadership
lack of recognition for their efforts when they take on informal leadership activities
teachers often receive no compensation for taking on leadership activities which involve more work and responsibility
lack of time and personal values of wanting to make a difference in the classroom working with learners
teachers feel extra duties take off from their delivery time, from my experience in my institution, it really does
