Social Barriers
family
- children with family who don't value physical activity have lower chance of opportunities for physical activity. lack of support from them is discouraging (lack of materials, financial support), parents also may have lack of time, energy or money to provide opportunities to participate in sport or physical activity
peers
- low interest levels in sport and physical activity that exists within a friendship or group provides few opportunities to engage in physical activity
caregivers
- could be coaches, teachers or educators focusing more on competition rather than enjoyment levels which can lead someone losing motivation or disliking physical activity or sport.
Cultural Barriers
Indigenous
more active (e.g hunting) -> links to health aspects: social structure, education etc

Environmental Barriers
BUILT (MAN-MADE)
Traditional Grid networks = enabler = greater connectivity for walking
Cul-de-sac design of houses (has poor connectivity)
Provision of footpaths
pedestrian crossing, traffic volume, calming devices, speed limits, mixed land use - lack of green spaces
People are more likely to walk/exercise if they can access a variety of places within 400 m
Psychological Barrier :
Opinions, attitudes, emotions, etc that stop someone from participating in physical activity.
