PATHOPHYSIOLOGY
Major depressive disorder is one of the most common psychiatric disorders. In 2014 it affected app 16 million adults in US or nearly 7% of the population. Its a disorder where depressed mood lasting for a minimum of 2 weeks, length of 5 to 6 months.
BEHAVIORAL INTERVENTION
Encourage patients to talk about their feelings. Have patient understanding what MDD is and how it can be affected short and long term.
NURSING INTERVENTION
Help patient identify current coping skills and explore alternate coping skills.
Provide information referrals, when needed, for religious or spiritual support.
Help the patient identify cognitive distortions that result in a negative self-perception.

common screening tools include the beck depression inventory, hamilton depression scale and geriatric depression scale
Assessment for suicidal thoughts
PATIENT EDUCATION
Teach the patient about the medication
Different types of therapy for mood depressive disorder
Change of lifestyle
Find out if the patient has suicidal thoughts.

Serotonin Antagonists and Reuptake Inhibitors
Tricyclic Antidepressants
Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors
