Jim Crow laws heightened segregation, especially in the southern states - African Americans had to use different bathrooms, buses, cinemas, schools, and restaurants than white people
African Americans had the worst jobs, pay, and housing. They lived in dirty and crowded "projects" where disease was rampant.
Entertainment
110 million movie tickets were sold weekly, Hollywood became the capital of the movie industry.

Government
The US was the most powerful country after WW1. Most countries in Europe suffered economic and agriculutral hardship since they were much closer to the conflict.

Anti - Immigration laws. Quotas were set for immigrants arriving from areas such as Eastern Europe and Asia.
The American Boom

Resources - The United States had large amounts of fertile land, coal and wood.

Mass Production - Items could be made quickly and cheaply. Workers were only skilled at one small task, this meant that they didn't have to be paid as much as more skilled workers.
Import Taxes - Taxes were placed on imports from other countries. This made imported products expensive and encouraged citizens to buy products of American origin.

Not everyone could afford new cars and goods, especially those living outside of cities where the wages were considerably lower.
African Americans were discriminated and were paid much less. Ford wouldn't hire any African Americans in his factory.
The coal and textile industry faced heavy competition. This led to unemployment and lower demand in those sectors.

Women
10% more women were working, however they were paid less and had no access to management jobs.
Flappers were stylish models that were copied by all. They had more freedom. For example, they could wear shorter dresses and drive.
