One does one become human. How does one go from personal to impersonal to societal. With Isha we have a lot of tools. What is a composite which is appealing for a CEO. Where is a politician, district collector... We ask people how do you feel, how do you listen. Are you giving me work or time to breathe and reflect?
78 slides offer a nucleaus. Most transformatiomnal programs on process and technology but they dont focus on the individual story. Role of individual, biases they bring, First thing of conflict resolution is understanding the individual. Everyone is unique, everyone has a story.
-
Resolving conflict. How are you feeling, where are you coming from today? The most imp thing in resolving the conflict is connecting with the heart, moving from head to heart, showing your vulnerability. Then you see you as a human.
You move from divergent interest to convergent interest. Not once did trade union got all demands met - it was a negotiation.
- Understand the individual 2. Develop common ground using tools. Empowerment : What is the level of skilling up need. You prioritise issues, you test them. You crystallise the agenda of issues of the root conflict. 3. Act
Imp that you talk to the one who makes decisions. You got to have the connection with the principals.
Trying to avoid elitistic agreements. The qs of legitimacy and credibility of outcome is very imp. It is called sufficient consensus.
-
Mandela magic : At the end of the day we have to be able to capture the imagination. He radiated something so pure that it made us want to be better human beings. We have to be able to create magic, not creating something which can be learnt from a Harvard Business School.
The ability for us to find common ground (we all want peace, we all want our children to be happy)
They have already tried a negotiation and reached a dead end. That is when they bring a mediator. Then you shuffle between the rooms to bring a common ground.
Identify the leader, not always who does the talking. You have to weave the solution to move from divergent interest to convergent interest.
You don't bring all district collectors, you have to mix them up - so that they get perspective from their enemies.
Role of sports or common activituies. Played ball with those who wanted to kill them - you have to recognoze the past but not carry it.
-
-
We can teach everyone everything but it can fail in a negotiation because fear can get in the way, ego can get into the way. Have to actually spend time in situations and see how they act. How have to see how they listen. Listening is a full time job. Successful negotiators speak little in the beginning because they are listening.
How you arrive, what you wear, it is all important. Empathetic listening, power of observation, watch body language. People dont always articulate what they are feeling so you have to observe people, and you reach out say to someone who has failed.
-
-
Skill: Neutrality. Listening, Leading from the front or the back. Charisma. They all felt safe with Mandela. It is the energy you bring to the process.
-
Not all negotiations succeed. We cannot solve every conflict. Don't get drawn into conflict that is not the core of your business.

Personal, family, community, interstate, whole world
Eg case study in south Sudan - resource war; Horn of Africa - over water, oil, grazing land; china and india - over water from Himalayas
Literacy was needed in South Sudan - training people to solve conflict at the lowest possible level, that solved.
Sometimes there is a higher way to look at the conflict. It can never be cast in stone, It is like hitting a stone when going down a stream.
