Plant Types
Pesticide plant vs. Non pesticide plant
Pesticide Plants
May effect other organisms. Recent exposure to pesticide may make it difficult to propagate cuttings. Other factors will not be damaged by pests.
May be toxic to handle, unknown whether plant has been exposed to pesticide, may result in difficult to grow cuttings.
Non-Pesticide Plants
Non-toxic to handle, more likely to be found in a native garden. Potentially, not affected by pests.
Can be difficult to determine whether pesticides have been used.

Non Native
Cress
Grows all around the year and optimum time is in winter. Propagation is able to occur from cuttings and takes up to three weeks to grow.
Have to purchase from Bunnings, unnecessary added costs
Chives
Growth best in spring and summer. Don't grow well from cuttings
Wrong time of year and propagation unable to occur from cuttings.
Basil
Not grown well in winter due to frost limiting the plants growth and can be propagated from cuttings.
Wrong time of year.
Lavender
Lavender cuttings can take two-four weeks to root. Grow best in dry summer.
Wrong time of year, propagation of cuttings takes to long to grow.
Native
Emu Bush
Easily accessible plant located in school grounds, little water required, easy to grow by propagating cuttings.
Minimal limitations
Bottlebrush
Germinates in warmer conditions in spring and summer.
Due to the timing of the practical being completed in winter, there is difficulty to germinate this plant, as warmer conditions are required to grow plant.
Gumtree
Difficult to establish roots of gumtree. Not all gumtrees can be propagated, once cut cannot re-establish themselves.
Experiment requires roots to be established to determine growth. Difficult to easily obtain a small cutting of plant due to height and magnitude of the branches.
Seed vs. Cuttings
Seed
Extensive choice can obtain from stores, etc. More time required to grow.
Seed most germinate to establish roots, old seeds may not grow. Experiment required to be competed in short timeframe and hence, time may limit the development of propagations from seeds.
Cuttings
Faster start of cultivation, shorter growth period, harvest quicker. Growth substances can stimulate root formation.
May be more difficult to obtain, need to cut appropriately to establish successful propagation. Some plants cannot be grown from cuttings.
Measurement of Outcomes
Size of Roots
Roots can be easily traced and the area can be calculated. Can use ruler to straight/stretch out roots and measure the length of them. Roots can alternatively be chopped and weight.
Have to pull out plant from it's soil and may rip the weak roots, affecting the true length of the roots, which reflected of the growth. Difficult to calculate area of unusual shape plant. Measurinng the longest length of roots does not take into account multiple roots. By cutting the roots prevets the plant from further growth.
Height of Plant
Having leaves may redirect growth towards the leaves as opposed to plant growing (height) of plants.
Limitation emu bush does not necessarily grow up, it becomes wider than taller.
Weight of Plants
Measuring with soil is a non-destructive technique - fresh weight measurement. Measurements can also be done without soil, or after drying plants in the over (dry weight).
Weighing with soil may cause measurement to not be a true reflection from watering the plant may also reflect this. f soil needs to be removed, the plant would have to be removed from the soil to measure pre-growth and after growth and this may cause trauma to the plant and affect its ongoing growth. Another method includes dry weight measurement, which tends to be more reliable, as plants may have a high composition of water; however, the plants will have to be dried in the oven and hence, may not be a valid measure.
Independent Variables
Temperature
Plants have various optimum temperatures for growth. Therefore, they have various tolerance limits. Emu bush can tolerate drought and also grow in cooler climates and conditions (except not as well in heavy frost),
Outside tolerance limits plants may not grow due to denaturing or inactivation of enzymes.
Light Availability
Plants need to photosynthesis to create glucose. Glucose is then used for respiration to provide an energy source. This energy is needed to help the plants grow/root. Emu bush grows well in full sun or in light shade. Light intensities could include: dark, low, medium, and high light intensities and this could be easily simulated (made artificially in labs).
Whilst plants need to photosynthesis they also may need dark to re-generate, bloom, and grow - different plant need different light conditions to grow.
Water Concentration
Plants have various tolerance limits for water. The emu bush does not need much water but the soil needs to be well-drained.
Over-watering can kill a plant whilst under-watering can restricts the plant's ability to grow.
Fertiliser/food Source
Honey
Good as rooting aid due to antiseptics and anti-fungal properties to protect the propagations. It is natural and no-toxic and may protect from rotting. Cheaper then purchasing rooting hormone. Easily prepare solutions of different concentrations. Safe for public use.
Need to ensure honey is real and not and artificial sugar syrup.
Rooting Hormone
Easily purchasable online or at local stores. Main rooting hormone is auxin that aids in initiating root formation. Can be powered, gel, or liquid.
However, despite being able to initiate root formation, auxin in high concentrations can prevent some roots from forming. If using a powered or gel it may be difficult apply a precise amount for each sample. Therefore, could accidentally use too much.
