Methamphetamine increases the amount of dopamine in the brain, and blocks the brains’ ability to reabsorb it, making it stay in the brain longer. For people with conditions like depression, increased dopamine means that they gain a pseudo feeling of happiness. For people with conditions like ADHD, increased dopamine allows them to slow down and feel normal.

Cycle of use in family
lack of parenting - if parents are taking the drug children are more inclined due the the lack of parenting and education around it.
If family members are using it meth maybe more prevalent in a household and then easily accessible for children (childhood exposure)
Genetics is both a contributing factor and a risk factor for addiction. Statistically, those who have a sibling or a parent with an addiction problem are at least two to four times as likely to become an addict. This statistic is according to Marc Galanter, MD, a professor of psychiatry at the NYU School of Medicine, who is also the director of the division of alcoholism and drug abuse at the New York University Langone Medical Center in New York City.

Stress
When a person is stressed out from work, family or something personal, they turn to the path of drugs to have an escape from reality. An example of a drug is taking meth. The person will take it so they can escape from their stress.
NIDA researchers have found that stress can cause changes in the brain like those caused by addictive drugs.
Meth & stress
“Meth is just the symptom . . . when you see some of the issues people are facing – lack of economic security, lack of a house, loss and grief, domestic violence – it is an escape from this misery. You won’t solve the meth issue without looking at these social issues, which are getting worse.”
Rat Park
Professor Bruce Alexander created an experiment where they tested whether rats would be drawn to drug laced water or not. When looking at this experiment he tried it in two different scenarios. One was a rat that was in a cage alone and had normal water and drug laced water, nearly always this rat would over dose from the drug water. However, when a rat is surrounded by food, toys and other rats it is not nearly as interested in this drug water and do not overdose from it.
