Should all people should have the right to own guns?
Yes
CLAIM: All citizens should have a gun
Every citizen should NOT have a gun only those who are trained and in some shape or form are shown to be responsible with said weapon.
CLAIM: If all citizens are required to give up their guns and the government officials keep their guns then citizens will be overpowered by the government.
The government has complete control of its citizens regardless if they take everyone's guns or not since they have the military and the police force which still gives them the man-power to declare a military state on its citizens regardless if they have guns or not. The government will ALWAYS have more resources than its citizens. However if citizens gave up all of their guns then a rebellion would be extremely ineffective against a military state government. Government's making it mandatory for their citizens to give up their arms can be seen as a red flag.
CLAIM: Owning a gun is an American right!
Owning any thing that can harm others shouldn't be "right" but a "privilege".
CLAIM: Even though spree killings occur and a lot of people can get killed with a gun this is not the only way to kill a lot of people in a short period of time, what about bombs?
True, bombs can kill the same amount, if not more people in a short period of time however a gun is easier to use to kill a lot of people than a bomb which is risky to build and requires significantly more skill and planning. Even though I do agree that even if guns are banned completely sociopaths will more than likely resort to bombs.
CLAIM: Workers or teachers in public places should have guns to take down a spree shooter before there are more causalities.
Even though it sounds like a good idea for teachers and/or workers in public places to carry it is still risky since we are now asking people who typically dont carry guns to carry them every day they go to work. Also would you want a teacher who is teaching your children carrying a gun. This is where responsibility and training goes a long way and not EVERY teacher would be able to do this only SOME. Also not everyone has the mental stability to shoot someone in high pressure situations like an active shooter situation that happens rarely. It is easy to shoot a target for most but not a living human being, even if that human being is harming others.
CLAIM: The real issue is mental illness.
Mental illness is definitely an issue but the fact that it is so easy for these individuals to get a gun in our country is indeed a problem. Helping the mentally ill is important but the system currently is broken since the mentally ill have to admit themselves and a lot of those who are mentally ill dont think that they are mentally ill or they tend to keep their mental illnesss to themselves. The best way to stop this is to the stop sales of military grade weapons to citizens. For instance, Johnny College dosent need a semiautomatic AK-47 for protection. What about folks who hunt or claim to hunt? Well for hunters there has to be a way to screen out those who hunt animals from those who hunt human beings, this is not an easy problem to solve. I would think the easiest way is to show a hunting license to the gun shop owner but this wont help if that "hunter" turns rogue in the future after they bought that rifle.
No
CLAIM: No citizen should have or need a gun.
This really depends on the citizen and their situation in life. I dont believe that citizens should have military grade weapons but one gun in the house for protection that is locked away and easily accessible when danger comes is fine. However NOT every citizen should have a gun if they have mentally unstable people living with them, they are mentally unstable themselves, or they have a lot of small children around. If they do then this is where a responsible citizen needs to be the owner of a gun. Too many irresponsible people leave their guns out and tragedy happens when a kid plays with it thinking its a toy or if the mentally unstable in their house gets their hands on it and commits suicide or worse, uses it to harm others.
CLAIM: School or spree shootings can be prevented.
Even though the number of casualties can be significantly reduced, crimes against humanity can still occur without the aid of a gun.
CLAIM: There would be no more crime.
There would still be crime since criminals always find ways to get guns and even if they banned guns completely, people always find ways to harm other's. However banning guns completely is a pipe dream since a national gun ban would be mandated by the government via a written law and we all know that criminals always find ways around the law so illegal guns would still find their way on the streets.
CLAIM: Owning a gun is a privilege!
It is true that owning a gun is a huge responsibility of the owner and should be treated as such.
