Slave Legacy in the Cape
Buildings
Castle of Good Hope.
Slaves erected most of the old buildings in Cape Town. They were skilled artisans and craftsman. The slave built many of the old buildings in Cape Town such as The Castle of Good Hope. They also built the houses on the Cape wine estates such as Groot Constantia, Vergelegen and Simonsig. Most of the slaves worked on farms outside Cape Town. And those that worked for the VOC lived in the slave lodge.

Language
Home languages of the slaves: Buginese, Javanese, Malagasy, Tamil, Creole Portuguese and Malay
The owners of the slaves mainly spoke Dutch, therefore all slaves had to learn Dutch. Afrikaans developed as a result of slaves trying to communicate with their Dutch speaking owners.

Afrikaans also contains many words that came from the eastern languages spoken by the slaves.
Examples of this are: Baie(many) and tronk.(jail). The first Afrikaans was written in Arabic script

Social challenges
At first when the slaves arrived there was a big communication issue because slaves and their owners did not speak the same language and they did not even speak the same language as their fellow slaves.

Cape Malay music came from the slaves and the Cape Malay musical tradition is continued today. It is known as the Cape mistral carnival held on the second of January.
The coons
They played: the ramkie(a guitar with three or four strings), concertina, the harp, the violin, the fiddle to name a few.

Slaves had the following religions: Christianity, Hindu, Islam and traditional African religions.
Food
Slaves in the countryside usually ate the food grown on the farms where they worked. They also ate fish.
The slaves that that worked in the house received better meals then those working in the fields. The slaves that worked on the wine farms received tots of wine. This was known as "dop system" or "tot system" sometimes it is still being continued today.
