One model of the start of prostate cancer is by prostate epithelial neoplasia, a precursor lesion. It is believed repeated injury and cell death occur to the prostate epithelium as a result of damage from inflammatory responses. Chronic inflammation disrupts the immune response. This occurs from injury resulting from infection, autoimmune disease, carcinogens, or diet. These molecular and genetic changes can increase instability that progresses a lesion to prostate cancer formation. (Rodway & McCance, 2019).
