The Legacy of Slavery at the Cape.
Language.
Slaves in the Cape spoke everything from Hindi to Dutch and Swahili. If a slave was communicating with another slave and were caught the slave owner would have probably thought that they were trying to devise a plan to escape.
When the slaves came to the Cape they could not understand each other because of their diverse backgrounds so they created languages like Afrikaans, an easier Dutch.
The language in the cape was mixed, mostly Dutch though, as the Jan Van Riebiek and the Dutch East India company were all from the Netherlands and Holland.
As I mentioned, the languages were mixed and most slaves were from across Asia as well as across Africa and Madagascar.
When a slave arrived at the Cape, they lost their original name, and their name would be changed to the month that they arrived in the Cape or the day or something around that type of name.
When they had their names changed, they could not practice their own religion, nor could they celebrate their own birthdays. This leads to many families having slave surnames which isn't a big issue but they can get bullied due to this.
Societal Difficulties That Happened Due to Slavery
Apartheid happened due to white people thinking that they are superior because they stole land from the original people in the Cape.
Racism happened mainly due to slavery (racism in the cape) and also due to the thought of superiority.
If you ever go into a small town you will see where each group of people live, white people having huge houses with swimming pools etc. And black/coloured people living in much smaller houses or shacks made of sheet metal/wooden planks. In Cape Town there are still settlements like this ----->
There are only black and coloured people living in the settlements. Where as you get houses like this ----->
where there are only white people living.
Foods
The food in the cape is quite diverse, because of all the different religions there were a lot of cultures mixing therefore leading to more people sharing their recipes and different types of foods.
When I say that the food in the Cape is diverse, I mean it if you go to any of the festivals (can't right now because of covid) you would see that there is everything from the traditional festival foods to things that you would find nowhere else in the world this would include: koeksisters, malva pudding (mainly a Christmas dish) all of those things a like and more.
Because of the different foods and festivities we make our main profit off of tourism and a lot of the tourism is actually because of our diverse food types.
Due to slavery we have expanded our food items in a huge way. In a way slavery helped us but also is a dark part of our history.
Music in the Cape due to Slavery.
There are a lot of different styles of music in the cape as a result of slaver, such as traditional, instrumental etc.
We have a lot of tradition in our music. probably the most well known instrument would be the Vuvuzela---->
Buildings.
We have a few buildings left over from the period of slavery such as: The Castle, Rhodes memorial and the slave lodge.
Most of the buildings that we have in the Cape are made out of brick and not painted as we live close to the shoreline.
The buildings that we have left over from the period of slavery shows us how cruel the Dutch and British were. There were hundreds of slaves cramped up in tiny buildings with terrible living conditions and they barely had rations.
