Factors Affecting Stress Response

age, genetics, health, nutrition, personality, previous experience
Attitude: influence the effect of stress on a person, positive attitudes view situations differently from those with negative attitudes
Hardiness: combination of commitment, control and openness to change, in combination these allow stressfull circumstances to turn into opportunities for personal growth
Being optimistic: can help you cope more effectively with stress, reduces a person's chances of developing stress-related illness
Resilience: being resourceful and flexible and having good problem-solving skills
External Influences
cultural and ethnic influences, number of stressors already experiencing, religious or spiritual influences, socioeconomic status, social support, timing of stressors
Effects of Stress on health
Acute stress is the alarm system
Chronic Stress can be harmful
linked to leading causes of death, including cancer, accidents and suicides
can effect cognitive function, including poor concentration, memory problems, distressing dreams, sleep disturbances, impaired decision making
changes in behavior - withdrawing from others, becoming quiet or unusually talkative, changing eating habits, drinking alcohol excessively, or becoming irritable
increase risk for cardiovascular disease, atherosclerosis, hypertension
Increases occurrences - migraines, IBS, peptic ulcers
