He has changed a lot since he was at school. He is braver, kinder and feels like a better person
On The Bus (Page 3)
He wanted to have a reason for all the things that went wrong in his life. It gave him hope and kept him going
Stanley's family did have bad luck (not because of a curse) but were innocent people who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
"Whenever anything went wrong, it felt good to blame someone. Things went wrong a lot. They always seemed to be in the wrong place at the wrong time."
“ I was going to write a letter to my mother, she’ll worry if I don’t.” (page 21)

'Going' implies that he still wants to look tough when he is speaking to squid and that he probably not going to write a letter anymore or maybe something disrupted him from doing it.

He loves his mum a lot and will do anything for her. Also he can tell her anything to his desire. He trust her with all his heart and doesn't want her to worry about him.

"He didn't have any friends at school. He was overweight and the kids teased him about his size. Even the teacher sometimes made cruel comments without realizing it."
He was a completly different person and he had self-esteem issues but when he came to CGL he felt like he had a lot of changes in his character by the end of the book
"Dear Mom, Today was my first day at camp, and I've already made some friends. We've been out on the lake all day, so I'm pretty tired. Once I pass the swimming test, I'll get to learn how to water-ski." (p.21)
