An innovative differentiation strategy for students at three levels of academic readiness and identifies assessments for tracking those students' learning based on the pre-assessment at the beginning of 2020-2021 school year (Grade 1)
Langhong Liu
The 5 students who answered most, including the most difficult, of the pre-assessment questions correctly
Writing
They will learn to write more words first. I will let them watch the videos of writing. In the videos, they will see how to write the strokes one by one in the right order. They can stop anytime they want. They will then practice writing on a white board or on the cupboard with chalks or write on salts. They will take pictures of their writing so I can know whether they did it. Then, they will practice writing on the worksheet with a pencil. I will look at their work and review their work to know their level. They will rewrite the ones they didn't write very well again. Finally, they will listen to the words and dictate the words. That is one of their summative assessment of writing.
They will create a book about their family and school. They can choose to use book creator or make a flip book. They will read their books to their buddy (a student from the third or second group) to help them read. That is another summative assessment of writing.
Reading
After they listen to the reading and read with it, they will record their reading again. I will listen to their reading and know whether they can read it independently.
-
If the students had some problems reading the books, I will help them in a small group. They will record it again after the small group instruction.I will know their level by listening to their reading.
After they record their reading, they will listen to the audio and read with it.
Finally, I will give them small groups instructions about the reading skills. After the small group instruction, they will do a reading assessment which is similar to the end of year level Chinese reading assessment. I will know their mastery of reading skills from the reading assessment. This is also a good practice to prepare for the end of year reading assessment.

Understand the usage of Bù, means "do not" or "no".
Understand the usage of the many different conjunction words in Chinese. The exact ones introduced at each level are shown in Chinese.
Students will be assigned new books about community, me and my family on level Chinese website (https://app.levelchinese.com/lc/browse/1) according to their level. They will try to read the books by themselves and record their reading.I will listen to their recording to know their independent reading ability,
Listening&Speaking
I will divide the students into two groups. One group has 2 students. One group has 3 students. I will show them some questions about the books they read. I will ask the questions. Students will answer the questions.
Students will work in their groups. Each group has an iPad. They will see a question on each page. One student will ask the question, the other student will answer it. They can listen to the correct answer. Then they exchange. Finally, they will record the questions and answers using voice thread.I will use it to do evaluation.
From some of them, they will put the answers together and say some sentences to do a presentation. That is a good way to prepare for the Confucius speech contest.
The 12 students who have some knowledge about the topic as shown in their score, but need to develop higher order thinking skills.
Reading
From the pre-assessment, I will know the words and sentences they can't read very well by themselves. They can read most of the words and sentences by themselves. There is no need to review everything. After the reteaching, I will let them read the books again, record their reading and do some words&sentences games to know their levels.
They need more help with reading skills. I will give them big group instructions about four basic reading skills to make sure they master these reading skills. I will use new books to make reading assessment which is similar to the end of year reading assessment. If finally they master the skills, I will move to the next step. If they still can't master it, I will use more days to help them master the skills.
Writing:the same as high level students. But they will be given more time to write characters and make flip books or electronic books.
These students are able to answer some questions with teacher's help. But without help, sometimes they feel the questions difficult to understand and they can''t say the right answer. I will let the students do puppet show to practice listening and speaking in real context. Finally, they will preform for the whole class. I will know their level from the performance.
