My Special Education Process
by Allison Lee
Step 1
Identify a child that is struggling.
Are they having trouble keeping up with in-class tasks?
Are they having difficulty focusing?
Are they having a lot of trouble grasping the material?
Are they acting out in class?
Are they withdrawing in social situations when they normally wouldn't?
Differentiate instruction in the general education setting if possible.
For example, if they have trouble sitting still or focusing try kinetic or visual instruction.

Keep careful records of if the child is or isn’t improving with modest intervention.
Step 2
Seek help from the school.
If a child’s needs can’t be met by simple in-class intervention, bring the attention to the administration.
“A school professional may ask that a child be evaluated to see if he or she has a disability. Parents may also contact the child's teacher or other school professional to ask that their child be evaluated. This request may be verbal or in writing. Parental consent is needed before the child may be evaluated. Evaluation needs to be completed within a reasonable time after the parent gives consent"(Küpper & Kohanek, 2013).
Step 3
The student is formally evaluated.
“The evaluation must assess the child in all areas related to the child's suspected disability. The evaluation results will be used to decide the child's eligibility for special education and related services and to make decisions about an appropriate educational program for the child. If the parents disagree with the evaluation, they have the right to take their child for an Independent Educational Evaluation (IEE). They can ask that the school system pay for this IEE"(Küpper & Kohanek, 2013).
Parents must consent to having their child evaluated for a disability.
Parents or teachers may request that a child be formally evaluated

Step 4
Results of the test are evaluated and it is determined what, if any, official intervention is needed.
In the US kids who qualify as having a disability under the IDEA definitions are entitled accommodations and resources. An IEP (Individualized Education Program) team must meet to devise a comprehensive plan for the student
