Genetic mutation can have varying effects on the phenotype. For example, the majority of mutations have no effect on the phenotype as they occur in DNA which does not code for proteins (non-coding DNA). Some mutations can have a small effect on the phenotype, and other mutations, rarely, can significantly affect the phenotype - for example, changing one base can change one amino acid in a protein.
