Photosynthesis: 6CO2 + 6H2O + photons >> C6H12O6 + 6O2
Light is absorbed the leaf's chloroplasts
The Light Stage
: takes place in the chloroplast's thylakoid membranes
Light absorption: All colors of the white light (except for green light) are absorbed by pigments (chlorophyll) in the chloroplast
Energy Transfer: The light energy is transferred to electrons where they become high energy. Within these chloroplasts, there are electron acceptors. Electrons will the go one of two ways
Cyclic Electron Transport
High energy electrons will flow through the electron carrier system, a series of electron acceptors, and then back to chlorophyll molecule. As they travel through acceptors, they lose energy.
The energy is in ADP molecules and is used to combine the extra phosphate and H2O
Light energy was used here to make ATP
Non Cyclic Electron Transport
Electron has gained energy from sunlight
Electron moves from acceptor to acceptor but does not return to chlorophyll, as it moves from acceptor to acceptor it is passed to NADP+ where now NADP+ becomes neutral
NADP molecule receives another electron to become NADP- which attracts proton + which was released when water was broken up. The molecule is now NADPH
Light energy here was used to produce NADPH from NADP+
