I Have Never Seen ''Volcanoes" by Emily Dickinson
In the human face
When upon a pain Titanic - Titanic is something large and this creates sympathy. The pain could be the emotions .
If the stillness is volcanic - Contradictory as volcanoes cannot be still. The ''IF'' makes it a hypothesis.
Features keep their place- The human face keep their features in place which could mean that despite all the pain and struggle we go through, our expression never changes and this could be because we humans tend to hide our emotions.
Initial impression of the poem- The poem is similar to A Still Life Volcano where both poems explore volcanoes and how it could portray human emotions and passion. I feel that this time she is comparing her passion to the volcano.
How those old - Phlegmatic mountains - Peaceful block bump on the ground, Stolid calm, unemotional
Usually so still -Gives us a sense that although it may be peaceful most of the times, he black bump could erupt. it is very abrupt especially with the pause in the end. The word ''usual'' creates suspicion and curiosity amongst the readers.
But, when Travelers tell - Experienced people
I have never seen ''Volcanoes'' - This comes across as surprising as we expect her to have already seen one. Symbolizes powerful, destructive, suppressed, repressed passions
Fire, and smoke, and gun - This is a list of agents that cause destruction that human beings have control of.
Taking villages for breakfast, - Vivid imagery of villages getting destroyed by volcanoes. The agents that cause destruction can do the same. Destroying villages for just breakfast gives us an indication that the destruction of a village is just on a small scale. It is capable of destroying more.
Bear within - appalling ordinance - Appalling- Horrifying, Ordinance- Weapons. The volcanoes, human emotions contain destructive things like guns, weapons, fire etc.. This is a list of agents that cause destruction.
And Appalling men - The men are covered with fear and are horrified by the destructive capabilities of the volcano.
Will not overcome - IF a person is unable to overcome the smoldering anguish.
And the palpitating Vineyard - Cant really make the connection? Palpitating is a condition that is associated with human and life. Palpitating is something that is alive.
If at length the smoldering anguish - The stanza begins with another hypothesis. Disturbing feeling by the ''smoldering anguish'' It is similar to the pain titanic in the 3rd stanza.
In the dust, be thrown?- The palpitating vineyard is thrown in the dust. Could symbolize death. the volcano is marching forward and is destructive.
On Resumption Morn - The historian remembered Pompeii.
Will not cry with joy ''Pompeii'' -
If some loving antiquary - Historian.
To the hills return! - Ends on a hopeful return. What could be so powerful that made the antiquary remember Pompeii? The suppressed emotions come back once again even after it destroys a lot. The poem ends with the hope that the persona's emotions/passions will get her back to life as well. Just as Pompiee, the destroyed city, was once discovered by the historian.
