OVULATION: Part of the menstrual cycle when the ovary releases an ovum
The ovary has many follicles, that are hollow balls of cells with an inmature egg in the center
Ovulation starts on the first day of menstrual bleeding
First 7 days of cycle: few follicles begin to grow (these mature follicles secrete estrogen hormone into blood stream, preparing the lining uterus for pregnancy)
Day 7: follicles stop growing and start to degenerate, except for one
Dominant follicle continues to grow and develops an egg inside it
Day 12: Follicle secretes estrogen into the blood stream
When the estrogen reaches the hypothalamus & the pituitary gland in the brain, the anterior or front part releases a type of hormone into blood stream
Day 14: this hormone (luteizing) causes the follicle to undergo a growth spurt
