The Battle of Trasimene: June 217
Winter
Scipio and Sempronius set up winter camps in two nearby cities
Winter hit Hannibal's troops hard, all but one of his elephants died
Rome created four new legions to fight, and two new consuls were elected who reorganized Rome's defences and created a large fleet
To take advantage of the new, supposedly weak, consul Hannibal decided to march through marshland and surprise Flaminius. The marshland was the route they'd least expect him to take
the Marshland
many of hannibal's celtic troops died from exhaustion
Hannibal lost an eye from an infection
Events
to enrage flaminius, the consul, hannibal ordered his men to destroy the italian countryside
Flaminius witnessed this destruction and was outraged. He was advised to wait until the other consul and his army could join him, but he refused to listen and marched after hannibal
Hannibal had sourced a nearby battlefield that would give him the upper ground, so his men burnt the countryside in a trail towards this place, to lead the romans there.
The roman army marched into the pass and hannibal gave his order to attack the romans from all sides
Flaminius was murdered and many romans ran into the lake in a desperate attempt to escape
In a few hours over 15,000 roman soldiers were dead
6000 romans fought their way to the carthaginian camp and tried to escape, but hannibal sent Maharbal to round them up and return them, where hannibal decided they would be sold as slaves
The mistakes of Flaminius and Servilius
servilius' reinforcements arrived too late, because hannibal had shocked them by marching through the marshland
Flainius was rash and very concerned abut his popularity
Flaminius did not think logically to plan his defence but was thrown into a temper when he saw the countryside destroyed
