AN INSPECTOR CALLS-SYBIL BIRLING
INSPECTORS INTERROGATION AND EVA SMITH/DAISY RENTON
mrs birling is delighted alongside her husband that the inspector was a hoax
she has no empathy or sympathy for Eva as she stated she only had herself to blame. this goes out very heavily handed and the inspector comes across and pushing. her pushes for the answers her expects o hear. he wants to hear the truth until he is satisfyed
Mrs Birling turns daisy away as a not deserving case. she fits the criteria well but Mrs birling decided that she didn't want to help the girl
Mrs Birling was angry at the gross impertinence used, when Eva smith called herself Mrs Birling
Sybil didn't think daisy was thankful enough for the advice given
she has a habit of trying not to believe what is being said, such as Gerald affair with Eva.
a working class girl would refuse money even if it was stolen
PRIESTLY'S USE OF MRS BIRLING
she views the lower class as morally inferior she knows that her husband knows and that the inspector knows what they both know.
priestly also gives us the views and beliefs that Mrs birling shouldn't be in charge. it tells us that Mrs Birling is meant to be a typical upper class housewife. she should be lunching with people, dining with people, being part of a good cause gong shopping. not doing anything. it seems like she is the only one who has her position secured by being a lady with great value
she states that she has done no more than her duty, which suggests the level of society is going in the direction that it is going in should not be a shock to the elder people of the society
Mrs Birling can be viewed as self important. she is posh, high end lady. when the inspector says you're not telling me the truth. her emotions appear to be shocked. she is shocked that someone can be accustomed in that manner. it also tells us how she is class conscious.
Priestly links in the seven deadly sins to the play. each character has been linked
Mrs Birling; wrath because she is angry at Eva smith for using her name in what she thinks is a spiteful way and pride. if she didn't know about Eva using her name then she wouldn't have contributed to her death
SOCIAL STANDING WITHIN
THE FAMILY
There is no bond with the children
treats Sheila like a small child, she doesn't know who her son really is on the inside.Eric is an alcoholic and his mother says his only a boy: (you can see how favoritism begins to play)
Mrs birling is still her husbands social superior
traditional views of women as she tells sheila that she needs to accept men talk is about business and amount other subjects
this gives an example of gender boundaries
she tells eric and sheila that they are overtired and should go to bed
WIDER SOCIETY
she exploits her power and control as chair of the committee as "she used some of my influence to have it" (this quote refers to the baby in the womb when she has it with Eric. by giving Mrs briling as her name before they were married was disgraceful.) daisy case was refused
Mrs Birling gives a great deal on how she is high up in the society of charitable work. however she lacks charity and remorse ( deep regret or guilt)
her husband is a high superior figure, he is expected to know her place as a woman.by doing so an example of this would be when she tells sheila to leave the men
APPEARANCE AND PERSONALITY
she seems the least sympathetic character in the play
she speaks in a very elitist / aristocratic manner
she is a chair of the brumleys woman's' charity organisation she is also referred to as the upper class society
she is given the description of about fifty rather large woman
she is a snob as is well aware of the social classes. when the birlings are having their dinner she reminds her husband not to thank their own chef as it is a general rule of thumb
she believes she is a socialist but she really isn't. she refused to help daisy renton at the time she was struggling
she is also a very dismissive person telling thee family of eva and referring o her as girls of that class
Mrs Birling has the least respect for the inspector out of all of them. she unsuccessfully did't intimidate the inspector and force him to leave, but then she ends up lying about the girl and the situation that had happened
MRS BIRLING IS A LIAR
on the first time she was shown a picture of Eva smith she just refused to aknowledge the photo
