Adaptations
-
-
-
For this activity children will place the stem of the leaf in colored water and see how the water runs through the leaf. The point is to see how a left adapted to get water.
-
Scientific Inquiry
The goal of science is to invest and understand nature while explaining events in nature and use the explanation to create predictions.
Science is uncertain so once new evidence is found in an experiment it can change the entire course.
Information can be collected in a material by graphing, there are three main types of graphs: line, bar, and pie.
A lab idea is that students could study catiolors as they changed into butterflies. During this lab activity students will explore and graph the many stages they see occurring. When the lab is over students will explore things like how many days did the overall lab take, or what differences did you see ?
Classification
Classification is how organisms are classified based on their characteristics that are shared and how their scientific names are determined.
-
In the 1600s, scientists took the organisms and divided them into two groups, plants and animals.
A lab idea is giving younger children a list of different animals and having the children place the animal in their correct classification group. Then explaining why the animal belongs to that group.
Cells
-
-
-
A lab idea is that students could study both animal and plant cells through a microscope. During this time students will look for any similarities and differences between the two.
-
Biological Evolution
Darwin’s theory is that evolutionary changes are gradual and slow and it’s based on natural selection.
-
-
A lab idea is to have children take home a family traits table. In this lab students will compare and contrast the similarities and differences in traits between themselves and their families.
Cycles on Earth
There are several different cycles, the water, life, plant and animal cycle.
-
-
A lab idea is to do a project on the life cycle of a frog. This would be a project that would be more long term as we would explore the many changes that a tadpole goes through to become a frog.
Plants
-
-
-
A lab idea is to explore plants. By having the children do a labeling exercise where they label each part of the plant to gain more understanding.
