Change Theory: Understanding People
Settlers
They sit in the middle and can be swayed either to go or to stay by the people around them. They are willing to go, but they want to see some significant evidence that the land “out there” is actually better than where they currently live.
Stay-at-Homes
Stay-at-homes may also be fearful that they have not and cannot master the skills needed to be successful in the “new way.” They will need a great deal of coaching, encouragement, and support.
Pioneers
Pioneers are adventurous and willing to take calculated risks. They follow the trailblazers, come back alive, and share their stories
Saboteurs
The saboteurs don’t merely resist the change, they actively work against it and try to bring as many people to their side as possible.
Trailblazers
These are the people whose hands shoot up when the principal asks for volunteers to try something new.
Roles Leaders Play
Intimidator
: A leader who is so energetic to improve student learning that he is constantly challenging the staff but not building much emotional connection.
Leader
Leaders must find the balance between building relationships with the staff and articulating a vision that challenges people to improve performance. It is usually wise to build relationships, to listen, and to slowly and strategically make improvements – not just changes.
Appeaser
Has a high need to be liked and tries to make everyone happy while student performance is flat or going downhill.
Avoider
He stays in his office and pushes paper but is rarely seen where the real action of learning happens.
Tip: Don’t talk about your previous school.
Managing Change Wisely
Abram trusted God more than the circumstance his human eyes could see.
You must learn to change only what is necessary. Make sure you change as little as possible for at least the first six months. During this time period, spend that time learning and building relationships.
