Biography & Works
Early Life & Family
Ruth Pitter was born in Ilford, Essex, in London.
Pitter gives credit to her parents, both teachers, for their simple taste in poetry as well as Sunday family gatherings where she and her brother used to recite poems that they had memorized a week earlier.
She also gives credit to the woodlands and the cottage she used to live in. This helps us see why she is so in touch with nature and why it is a big inspiration to her. She also finds it easier to be in nature for her creative state rather than with human relationships.

Pitter was employed at the War Office in Britain at a very young age. She worked there from 1915 to 1917.
Her first published poems came out a few years before she began working at the Office.
