Part 1: Research
Unpack the brief using critical thinking techniques
participate in the "understanding labels" workshop
evaluate how existing labels work
discuss the legal requirement constraints of labelling for beauty and cosmetics
discuss current and emerging trends within the labelling industry
include photos of exciting labelling and identify what elements stand out on them
research and document 3 existing label/packaging companies and discuss trends and technologies in the industry
investigate any local or international packaging award possibilities and assess the opportunities and challenges represented
investigate any local or international packaging designers
organise a schedule for time management while working on this project
select a company identity for your client. Develop a logo that can be applied to you label
brainstorm what product you will be creating the labels
what product range it will be
what product names will be for your three varieties of your product
what process, technologies and materials would be utilised
obtain your product and research he competition for your selected product and evaluate the effectiveness the design
record intellectual property implications that could arise based on your research
record what legal requirements and elements that are needed for your specific packaging
develop three possible label shapes and show how it would work in commercial use
gather feedback from your peers to finalise the label choice
research and select two possible substrates for your label, discussing which is functional for your product
Part 2: Design & Review
experiment with the hand drawn designs of your labels for three varieties. Consider new and different approaches to format, type and visuals. Document and explain type selections
document feedback about the designs and adjustments required
refine hand drawn designs and planned adjustments to digitally create your labels to correct technical specifications
continually seek and document feedback and complete self-evaluation of your work until the labels are finalised
be sure to proof read your designs
use version control when changes are made to your designs and document your process
print mock ups to test and confirm the design is functional for your product
evaluate how the elements and principles of design are applied to the type and visuals of your design
Part 3: Construction
save the final label designs as separate PDF files
print and apply the labels safely an accurately
outline the process and the WHS for cutting and affixing your labels
