The Procession
began at sunrise at the Dipylon Gate and then proceeded along the Panathenaic Way which led through the agora to the Acropolis
Young girls (7 - 11) who served Athena known as the Arrephoroi carried a specially woven robe, the peplos, to dedicate to the statue of Athena Polias

finally, came the longest section of the procession, the ordinary athenians organised by deme
Once they arrived at the Acropolis, at least a hundred animals were slaughtered. some meat was offered in the fire to the goddess, the rest was shared amongst the people
What is it?
the grandest festival of the athenian year, which celebrated Athena's birthday in July or early August
Panathenaia meant 'all-Athenian' and was a chance for all athenians to come together to worship Athena
Every four years the Panathenaia was held on an even grander scale with more activities, known as the Great Panathenaia
Sporting Events
all the events commonly held at the Olympics were held here, including:
running events: the most famous was the 200-metre sprint, known as the stadion
combat events: there were three of these including boxing, wrestling and pankration (a fight with few rules)
The Pentathlon which was comprised of discus, long jump, javelin, stadion and wrestling
Equestrian events including horse races and chariot races as well as one event distinctive to the Panathenaia called the apobates which involved charioteers dismounting from their chariots during the race
competitors in all events were divided into three classes: boys, beardless youths and men
a victorious athlete won a large number of amphorae full of olive oil. One side always had an image of Athena with the inscription 'from the games at Athens'
