TYPES OF CHEMICAL REACTIONS
Precipitation reaction
The formation of an insoluble salt when two solutions containing soluble salts are combined. The insoluble salt that falls out of solution is known as the precipitate, hence the reaction's name. Precipitation reactions can help determine the presence of various ions in solution.
EXAMPLE:
AgNO3(aqueous) + NaCl(aqueous) , AgCl↓ + NaNO3 (aqueous)
Mg(OH)2(s) + 2HCl (aqueous) , MgCl2(aqueous) + 2H2O(l)
Combination reaction
A combination reaction (also known as a synthesis reaction) is a reaction where two or more elements or compounds (reactants) combine to form a single compound (product). Such reactions is represented by equation of the following form: X + Y → XY.
EXAMPLE:
Na2 + H2O
->
2NaOH. Here sodium oxide is combined with water gives sodium hydroxide.
Combustion reaction
In a combustion reaction a substance reacts with oxygen from the air and transfers energy to the surroundings as light and heat. The products of a combustion reaction are called oxides.
EXAMPLE:
Combustion of methane. CH4(g) + 2 O2(g) → CO2(g) + 2 H2O(g)

CLASS : 10
SUBJECT : CHEMISTRY
Displacement reaction
A displacement reaction is the one wherein the atom or a set of atoms is displaced by another atom in a molecule.
EXAMPLE:
zinc displacing iron ions from iron(II) sulfate solution.
Double displacement reactions
A double displacement reaction, also known as a double replacement reaction or metathesis, is a type of chemical reaction where two compounds react, and the positive ions (cation) and the negative ions (anion) of the two reactants switch places, forming two new compounds or products.
EXAMPLE:
Example : Reaction of iron nails with copper sulphate solution.
Photochemical decomposition reaction
Those reactions in which a compound split up into two or more simpler substances are called as decomposition reaction. They are carried out by applying heat, light, electricity.
EXAMPLE :
O3 + hν → O2 + O(Photolysis occurs in the atmosphere wherein ozone molecules is broken down into oxygen molecule and atomic oxygen.
Electrolyte decomposition reaction
Electrolytic decomposition may result when electric current is passed through an aqueous solution of a compound.
EXAMPLE :
Dissociation of water:2H2O→ 2H2 + O2
Thermal decomposition reaction
Thermal decomposition is a chemical reaction where a single substance breaks into two or more simple substances when heated. The reaction is usually endothermic because heat is required to break the bonds present in the substance.
EXAMPLE :
CaCO3 → CaO + CO2 When heated Calcium Carbonate, decomposes into Calcium Oxide and Carbon Dioxide.
