Aim of the course
The purpose of this course is to progress and to improve students’ general communicative competence in medical English and professional oriented to be able to communicate in academic and professional settings successfully.
Course Describtion
This course supports students to be able to communicate easily in their medical field. This program assumes of 12 units and each unit includes 2 lessons for per week. The program will give priority to the development of all language skills. By the way, the vocabulary will be addressed to the extent necessary to cover a number of words and phrases required by the list of topics. In addition, grammar will be addressed to meet students' communicative needs and will be taught as part of phrases through prescribed expressions during role-plays and drills.
Target Learners
In this study participants are 1st year students from Medical faculty of Tashkent Medical Institute, 12 females and 13 males, aged 18-20. Their level of English is intermediate.
Course Objectives
• Recognizing the vocabularies of the human organs and devices of medical environment and describe these vocabularies;
• Describing pains and symptoms and gathering patient information;
• Identifying common illness; respiratory system disease;
• Writing symptom report, later of referral and a hygiene laboratory notice;
• Interpreting instructions of sterilization procedures;
• Complete physical examination and practicing the dialogue of dealing with patients.
Needs analysis
They all want to understand scientific articles, research papers
Medical students mostly want to have improvements in their productive skills rather than receptive ones.
Students have lacks in listening skill. They stated that it is hard for them organize the information that they are perceiving and that`s why they cannot predict information beforehand.
Sometimes they find it difficult to evaluate information during the lectures and it influences to their performance.
Students believe that a good writing skill helps them to develop critical thinking and to establish a good argument.
Content Information
The course plan includes 12 units with two summative assessment, one in the middle of the course (individual test and writing summary) and one in the end (individual essay and oral test), as mentioned above, all the topics of this program are related to the medical field in order to develop professional and general-oriented communicative language competence in medical English and expand the vocabulary terminology of students in medical English
Learner Outcomes
• comprehend medical terms in English, such as defining a medical vocabulary in the contents of a medical journal and in reading text;
• understand medical instructions in English, for example, practice basic medical instructions for English-speaking patients and follow a written medical prescription.
• Communicating and dealing with patients and with others using English in medical environment.
