- - - - Several thousand returned home with battle scars they would carry for life, some went home with missing limbs, others had damaged lungs from the gas attacks and many had hideous scars from their wounds. Many others also came home with pneumonia or a myriad of other illnesses. Several Canadian soldiers suffered from Shell Shock and received no sympathy and no support. Shell shock was believed to be "a manifestation of childishness and femininily," and ignoring it was considered to the the best treatment. The returning adjustment to civilian life was made more difficult by their friends and families. Soldiers witnessed deaths in the trenches had to listen to those who stayed home and complained bout things that couldn't compare to what the soldiers had been through.
    - - Despite all the help women gave during war, many Canadians still had a very different view of women. It was assumed by men that when the war ended and soldiers returned home, that women would return back home as house makers and happily leaves their paid jobs. During this time, the federal government also posted a poster campaign which actively encouraged women to leave their jobs. One of these posters read: " Do you feel justified a job which could be justified by a man who has not only himself to support, but his wife and his family as well? Think it over." Many women gave up their jobs they held during war, but for those who held their jobs saw their wages get cut.
  - - - Overproduction: the overproduction of goods was more than the canadian customer could purchase
      - Few primary products: Canada was too dependent on few primary or basic products ( wheat, fish, minerals, pulp and paper ) for its wealth
      - Linked to american economy: since the Canadian economy was too closely linked to the United States, when depression hit America, they no longer needed canadian trade goods, the Canadian economy suffered alongside America
      - Tariffs: Recovering European Nation placed tariffs on foregin goods sold to their country to protect their home industries
      - Credit: During the economic boom, many canadian families brought everything on credit in terms of the “ buy now, pay later “ plan. Unfortunately, those families had brought so much on credit that all their monthly income was going off to paying off their credit purchases and any loss of income, even short term, could cause the family to lose everything.
      - Buying on Margin: Many people wanted to take advantage of the rising price of stalks and the profits made from their sale. When the stock market crashed, everyone lost their money, including banks and businesses. It had come to the point where people were forced to sell their personal belongings to get the money to pay back the loans they took out on the failed stalks.
    - - Life during the depression was hard. By 1933 almost 1/3 of all Canadians were out of work. People were starving and lost their homes, there was no money for food, clothes and other necessities, people could no longer afford to operate cars or afford gas to the point where people would get their cars pulled by horses and by the 1930's there was no unemployment insurance, no family allowance and no government sponsored medical care.
      - When Bennett comes to power as Prime Minister, he wanted to help businesses grow and survive, create jobs and create a market for goods and etc. Bennett Raised tariffs to protect Canadian businesses from foreign competition, exports of resources was not helped by this and international trade stopped. The Canadian government gave $20 million to help the unemployed but Canadians still needed more.
      - Bennett introduced Relief Camps. Single homeless men were put into the camp. The camp provided food, shelter, clothes and given 20 cents a day. Men in the camp were needed to build bridges, roads, cut trees and dig ditches, yet for all that handwork, they were payed so little. In return, the men in the camps were also given bunkers to sleep on, 3 meals a day and medical care.
