Background
Mohandas K. Gandhi (1869-1948), often called by the title "Mahatma"Great Soul", was one of the people who spearheaded the Indian drive for independence from British rule. His leadership helped the Indian people achieve independence through non-cooperation with unfair laws imposed by the British.
Main Idea 1
Gandhi Writes this letter to his friend regarding the high tax on salt and the prohibition against producing salt independently.
Main Idea 2
The Viceroy may appreciate the opportunity to fix the problem before the situation gets out of control. He may appreciate Gandhi"s ability to separate the issues from the people involved.
Mai Idea 3
Gandhi wants to serve both the Indian people and British by using nonviolence to reveal the wrongs British rule has perpetrated on India. His action are not against the British people, but in service to them.
Main Idea 4
The Viceroy might understand that Gandhi's "Weapon" is not intended to harm anyone because Gandhi loves his family and wouldn't hurt them. Gandhi considers the British to be members of his larger family.
Main Idea 5
Gandhi offers to meet with the Viceroy and withhold the publication of the letter. If the Viceroy is worried about embarrassment among his colleagues for allowing the protest movement to grow, he may appreciate Gandhi's offer.
