Judgement
Amy judges Nicks parents " As if my mother were some Asian peasant tribes woman arriving from the tundra with an arm full of raw yak meat and some buttons for bartering." (pg. 6). Amy seems very judgmental of Nick's family.
-
A news reporter captured a picture of Nick smiling at the search party for Amy. This was very quick to judge his intentions by his facial expressions.
Bonny, one of the investigators, states that Nick is very type B personality. She states this after only a few questions with him.
The investigators were judging Nick because he did not know his wife's blood type. This should not make the officers more suspicious of Nick.
Nick asks Amy's old friend if she has any ideas where Amy could be. She responds with: "I haven't talked to Amy since high school. I learned my lesson. If I saw her on the street, I'd run the other way." (pg. 367 on iPad).
Manipulation
Amy
Amy purposely planted a fake diary for the police to find, which revealed that Nick was taking advantage of her sexually. This shows that she is willing to lie to the highest level of authority to achieve what she wants.
-
Amy does not only manipulate other people, but herself as well. She states "Nick wants me gone" ( page ). Nick never said this to Amy, she just simply made herself feel that way, and think that Nick wanted this.
When she wanted to raise her life insurance before her disappearance, to further blame Nick for the supposed murder, Amy got him intoxicated before luring him into signing the papers.
When Amy buys a gun, this manipulates the press into thinking she is afraid of something. Nick was asked if he knew about this purchase, and he did not. She wanted people to believe she was afraid of Nick.
"I can't ever go back to my old life, Desi. Nick will kill me. I'll never feel safe. But I can't let him go to prison. i just wanted to disappear. I didn't realize the police would think he did it." (pg. 862 on iPad) This manipulates Desi into thinking that she is the victim because she needed a place for refuge.
Nick
"My wife loved games, mostly mind games." (pg. 18) This shows, even in the early stages of the book, that Nick was aware of Amy's ability to toy with him mentally, and acts as a foreshadow of what is to come in the book.
When Nick was cheating on Amy with one of his students, he told the student that he would soon divorce Amy and pursue a relationship with her instead. This led her on to continue their affair.
Nick manipulates Amy to thinking he is till in love with her when he is not. Nick has been holding off a divorce for months. The day was going to approach Amy, she dispersed.
