Main characteristics
Society
The Emperor was on top of the social ladder followed by nobles , merchants, craft people, farmer and slaves. Soldiers were feared and respected.

Pottery: Jars, cups etc.. were made of porcelain. Excellent cabinets were made of wood. Horses, cattle, sheep and dogs were domesticated.
Trade
They traded with Japan, India, Egypt, Mesopotamia and the Mediterranean countries.Chief export items were Silk, tea, Chinaware and Paper

Religion
Worshiped the forces of nature; Ancestor worship was prevalent. Later they became followers of Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism.

Clothing- Poor people wore cloths made of hemp and later also cotton. That were loose fitting pants and shirts they were also offended for wearing silk People of higher status wore clothes of silk generally long robes. Rules of clothing- There were many rules around colours and who got to wear what type of clothes. Colours- only the Emperor could wear yellow. Poor people were only allowed to wear black and blue clothing. Colour of clothing also symbolized emotions- white colour was wore during mourning red was worn to show joy and happiness.
Ornaments and jewelry- they were used to signify the ranks of people. They were very particular of what jewelry to wear especially for men so they could signify their ranks. the jewelry were- belt hooks or buckles decorate and made from bronze or gold. women wore a lot of jewelry in their hair such as combs and hairpins
Hair styles- Hair was considered important. Men tied their hair into a knot on top of their head and covered it with a square cloth or hat. Woman braided and coiled up their hair in various hair styles and then decorated it with hairpins. Girls were not allowed to curl up their hair with hairpins until they were married. Most people wore their hair long. short cut hair was often considered a punishment and was sometimes used for prisoners. Monks shaved their hair to show that they did not care about looks.
