CHAPTER 11: RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
Qualitative Methodology
An array of interpretative techniques, which seek to describe, decode, translate & otherwise come to term with the meaning, Not the frequency, of certain more or less naturally occurring phenomena in a social science. :
Mostly exploratory in nature, involving a relatively small number of respondents
Quantitative Methodology
Involves developing more systematic & sophisticated procedures to test, prove & verify hypothesis.
Use of predetermined responses categories by means of standardized data collection instruments so as to enable statistical techniques to be used to assist in the interpretation of the data
Characteristics of Qualitative Research Methodologies
Purpose
a better understanding of complex situations
Process
specific focus, design, measurement instruments (eg, interview) :
Data Collection
collect verbal data (IV, Comment, Document)
Data Analysis
use inductive reasoning to make specific observation, draw inferences about larger and more general phenomena :
Reporting Findings
research must have sufficient skills to write clearly.
Elements in Quantitative approach
Purpose
study a crucial phenomenon and these findings can be generalized to other persons and/ or place
Process
represents particular mainstreams that are ideas or phenomena in the related literature
-Data Collection
identify variables that you want to study and collect data that are related to those variable
Data analysis
research derived from a deductive approach (based on hypothesis)
Reporting findings
data should be presented via graphic techniques (frequency tables, means, median correlation)
