Alliances were formed causing
countries that weren't involved in conflicts to get roped in for no reason.
Because of these alliances when the Archduke of Austria, Franz Ferdinand, was assassinated a whole bunch of countries got roped into a conflict that had absolutely nothing to do with them.
Militarism, as well as a few other 'isms, played a massive role in starting the war. I do believe militarism was the main 'ism so I'll just focus on that one.
All these countries, tied into all these alliances and they all want to flex that they have the biggest, coolest, strongest military and it ends up leading to one big mess known as The Great War!
Zeppelins are giant air ships with guns and turrets attached to them. Their only downfalls are that they are very slower (slower than planes), and they are fairly easy to bring down.
Mustard Gas is a biochemical that can be released into the air and if someone were to breath it in, they would experience bronchitis like symptoms and most died of long term lung disease. This caused soldiers to carry gas masks everywhere they went. After WWI Tear Gas and Mustard Gas were banned from warfare for being a war crime.
WWI was the first war to have automatic weaponry. Some of these weapons include m1911 (known as a Colt today) a semi automatic pistol, and the Bar the first fully automatic assault rifle to be used in war.
Over 12,000 Native Americans served as snipers, scouts, and code talkers (see next paragraph). These men and women had hopes of becoming U.S. Citizens. By 1924 only 40% of these soldiers had their U.S. Citizenships.
Native Code Talker were Native American intel men who used very unique Native codes to communicate. Nobody could crack these codes so without them this war was completely unwinable.
The 369th Infantry Regiment, AKA The Harlem Hellfighters, were an African-American infantry squad that spent more time in combat than any other American soldier in the whole war. Another example of People of Color being overshadowed by the majority.
After the first World War, Woodrow Wilson proposed the League of Nations, an international organization to keep of all countries out of war ever again.
Although the president at the time Woodrow Wilson proposed the idea the US never actually joined the league due to isolationist opinions from congress.
Ultimately? No. It didn't work. It never worked. The US refused to join so it couldn't ever gain power. The voting system was a complete mess, and no country could make unanimous decisions.
